Sabarna Choudhury

(Noun) Sabarna Choudhury is the name of the Brahmin clan which owned, among other areas, the tract of land that came to be known as Calcutta (now Kolkata) metropolis. The clan was divested of its rights by East India Company after the battle of Plassey in 1757. Earlier, in 1698, the clan had granted the Company only rental rights.Usage: The Sabarna Choudhury clan ruled Calcutta before the arrival of Britishers.
